A charger plate should be about 2–4 cm larger than the dinner plate placed on top of it. Standard charger plates measure 30–33 cm in diameter. This creates an even border that frames the place setting and makes the table look more festive.

Both are deep plates, but they differ in shape: A soup plate often has a narrow, deep well, while a pasta plate is usually wider and flatter with a raised rim. Pasta plates are therefore also well-suited for risotto, salads, and bowls.

The bread plate is placed to the upper left of the forks, often with a small butter knife on top. With a diameter of about 15–17 cm, it is significantly smaller than the dessert plate. For a simple everyday place setting, you can also omit it.
