For each person, you need at least a dinner plate, a dessert plate, a soup plate or bowl, and a cup. For a household that entertains guests, six to eight place settings are a good rule of thumb. Plan for one or two spare pieces so that you don't have to buy more after a breakage.

A dinner plate usually has a diameter of 26–28 cm, while dessert and breakfast plates are around 20–22 cm. The exact dimensions are listed for each product. Measure before you buy to make sure larger plates fit into your cupboard and the baskets of your dishwasher.

This depends on the material, glaze, and decoration – which is why this information is provided for every product. It is generally better to wash pieces with gold or metal rims and particularly delicate glazes by hand. A gentle cycle with a low temperature will keep glazes looking beautiful for longer.

Cutlery and table linens such as napkins and placemats round off the table.
Tableware sets are a straightforward starting point or a lovely gift.

Buying tableware: What to keep in mind

Basic equipment: Plan for at least one dinner plate, one dessert plate, one soup plate or bowl, and one cup per person—and include one or two spare place settings for guests and in case of breakage.
Plate sizes: Dinner plates usually measure 26–28 cm in diameter, while dessert and breakfast plates are about 20–22 cm. Check beforehand whether large plates will fit in your cupboard and dishwasher.
Space at the table: Allow for about 60 cm of table width per setting so that plates, cutlery, and glasses have plenty of room.
Combining: A calm base in white or natural tones can be reinvented time and again with colorful bowls, glasses, or table linens. Rule of thumb: use no more than two or three colors or glazes per table.
Everyday use: Whether a piece is dishwasher or microwave-safe is indicated for every product.

Material & care

Porcelain is usually finer and thinner, stoneware has a more robust and natural feel, and ceramics with reactive glazes offer vibrant color variations, ensuring each piece looks slightly different. Avoid extreme temperature shocks, stack glazed plates with protective liners if possible, and hand-wash delicate glasses and pieces with metal rims. Care instructions are provided for every product.
