Buying a solid wood table: What you should know

Oiled or lacquered: Oiled wood feels natural and can be repaired locally, but requires occasional maintenance oil. Lacquer provides stronger protection against stains, but scratches can only be repaired over a large area.
Wood expands and contracts: Solid wood absorbs and releases moisture. A room humidity of about 40–60% prevents cracks; keep it away from radiators.
Edge profile: The straight edge looks clean and bold, while the Swiss edge is beveled downwards, making even thick tabletops appear slender.
Solid wood or veneer: Veneer is a thin layer of real wood on a base panel – dimensionally stable and lighter, but it can hardly be sanded down.
