Both are names of classic marble varieties whose look is being replicated – at Akante, usually in ceramic: Calacatta stands for light, white marble with grey veining, Marquina for deep black marble with white veins. The exact material the tabletop is made of can be found on the respective product page.

Upholstered chairs with fabric or velour covers provide a soft contrast to the smooth tabletop, such as Charleston or Vienna Twill. For a harmonious look, pick up a shade from the veining, for example, grey or beige. Since the Akante chairs are sold in sets of 2, it is best to plan with an even number.

Akante is a French furniture brand from Wasquehal near Lille, founded in 2012—and it has specialized in something that makes a difference in everyday life: ceramic tabletops. They look like marble, travertine, or oak, but can handle hot pots, red wine, and children’s hands—things that would spell trouble for real marble.

Why ceramic?

Ceramic is a natural material made from fired clay. Its surface is very hard and dense: resistant to scratches and heat, and it barely absorbs stains—a damp cloth is all it takes to care for it. At Akante, the ceramic is either bonded to a glass plate or made entirely of ceramic; the frames are made of powder-coated steel.

Choosing the right tabletop finish – our rule of thumb

Light finishes like Calcatta (a white marble look with gray veining) make small rooms feel larger. Dark ones like Marquina (black with white veins) create a calming focal point in large, bright rooms. Light oak and travertine have a warm look and work well with wood floors.
